Curls up in the snow to sleep...

A gray wolf, Canis lupus, curls up in the snow to sleep, with his eyes looking into the camera.
A beautiful National Geographic photo, taken by Jim And Jamie Dutcher, at the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, and featured here on a wrapped canvas print.

The gray wolf and its winter fur

The gray wolf has a thick winter fur, with an outer layer composed of coarse guard hairs, and a dense underfur layer providing it with excellent insulation against cold conditions. The winter fur is highly resistant to cold - wolves in northern climates can rest comfortably in open areas at −40° by placing their muzzles between the rear legs and covering their faces with their tail!
